The gaming industry's Washington, D.C.-based lobbying group has shifted course on its view of legalized Internet gambling and now believes the technology exists to allow the activity to be regulated at the state or federal level.

In a new policy statement, the American Gaming Association said it was open to the concept of legalized Internet gaming, as long as a regulatory structure was in place to protect consumers and the game's integrity.

But the organization, which represents the bulk of the nation's casino operators and slot machine manufacturers, has not taken a stance on any of the bills now floating through Congress that could legalize all or some forms of Internet gaming, estimated to be a $26 billion a year industry.

"If something were to start, then fundamentally this give us a seat at the table," American Gaming Association Chief Executive Officer Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. said Wednesday. "The majority of our board now has a favorable stance on Internet gaming, as long as there is strong regulatory control. But also, we're not endorsing any of the bills now in the loop."

The policy is a change from the neutral stance toward Internet gaming the organization has taken since 2025. Before taking that view, the American Gaming Association supported a congressionally backed independent study of Internet gaming by the National Research Council at the National Academy of Sciences.

Internet gaming has been hotly debated in Washington, D.C., for much of the past decade. In 2006, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act made it a crime for banks and other financial institutions to process transactions used in online gaming.

Still, the American Gaming Association estimated $5.9 billion was wagered by U.S. residents with offshore online gambling companies in 2025 while $21 billion was bet by players worldwide.

"This is a topic our board has discussed many times," Fahrenkopf said. "The board has been split three ways: those who were opposed, those who were in favor and those who were unsure. That left us pretty neutered, but this stance allows the organization to be a player in what is ultimately decided."

New Investments in Land Based Casinos

I just read in the local newspaper here in Portugal that my former company Solverde is planning to make major investments in their casinos.

These investments in brick and mortar casinos will soon see their days depart in the upcoming years, because as we move on, online gaming will prevail over these types of casinos. When I refer to online gaming, I also refer to mobile gaming, as this soon will grow more and more.

I think that the portuguese casino managers are stuck in the present and not looking to the future. And Vegas casinos also will have to face the fact one day that igaming casinos will take over. They are chipping away at profits right now, without them preparing themselves. This could mean major disaster down the road.

Online Bingo set to Grow even More

Online Bingo has been growing steadily as more and more new players come on board.  It is estimated that by 2012, online bingo will represent about 25% of the online gaming market. However, this percentage of market share is overestimated to some degree. Nonetheless, it will gain a more significant role as betting is usually lighter and attracts the softer crowd of gamblers. Profits are expected to reach $2billion in 2012, as the rest of the igaming industry starts to mature and consolidates.

It appears the market is growing at 3% month on month, compounded annual growth near 40%. These growth expectations can also be attributed to the easing up of legislation from countries like France and Italy. And just wait til the US opens up and what should be expected then.

Along with the penetration of broad bands and mobile phone users that allow these apps, all these factores will play a major role to make the bingo industry a bright one.

•    France Poised to Deliver Jackpot for U.K. Gambling Companies

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- PartyGaming Plc, William Hill Plc and 888 Holdings Plc, U.K. gambling companies facing a slowing market at home, may get a boost as neighboring France opens its online-betting market to foreign operators next year.

A bill that comes before the French parliament Oct. 7 would let foreign companies offer sports betting and poker, ending the monopolies of state lottery provider Groupe Francaise des Jeux and Pari Mutuel Urbain, which runs gambling on horseracing. All other online betting is currently banned.

“The size of the population and the appetite for gambling, and the group’s historically cautious approach to France make this a particularly exciting opportunity for us,” said Jim Ryan, chief executive officer of PartyGaming, the owner of the PartyPoker brand and the U.K.’s biggest online-gaming company by revenue.

Sales from electronic gambling in France will more than double to 671 million euros ($992 million) in 2025 if new rules come into effect in the middle of next year, according to estimates from H2 Gambling Capital, a Manchester, England-based consulting company. In 2011, the market will be worth 1.03 billion euros, an additional 53 percent increase.

U.K. gambling companies struggled this year as the worst recession since World War II restrained spending. First-half net income fell by 26 percent to 58.7 million pounds ($95.8 million) at William Hill, the country’s second-largest online- gaming company, and by 57 percent to $8.1 million at 888 Holdings. PartyGaming posted a net loss of $66.9 million.
